Millions of Young Teens Home Alone in the Summer

June 19, 2008

Millions of tweens–children ages 11 to 13–will be left home alone this summer, despite their parents’ concerns they may not have the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe at home, according to the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

According to the results of the hospital’s national poll on children’s health, many parents worry that their at-home tweens do not know how to safely use kitchen appliances, where to go to stay safe during a severe storm or that they should not give out personal information on line or over the phone. Yet, one in five parents polled say that they have left tweens home alone for an entire day.

Early Birds in College Get the Good Grades

June 10, 2008

As you pass along advice to your college-bound child, you may want to share the “early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” adage.

Researchers from the University of North Texas have found students who are morning people tend to get better grades than those who are night owls.

“The finding that college students who are evening types have lower GPAs is a very important finding, sure to make its way into undergraduate psychology texts in the near future, along with the research showing that memory is improved by sleep,” said study co-author Daniel J. Taylor in a prepared statement.
